PT Pow wow
The only PT in Genesis to be Auckland born!!! I spent my childhood growing up in East Auckland with my family of which my folks still live in browns bay. I went to AUT, North Shore and did a Bachelor of Sport Science.
After graduating I moved to London to gain some worldly experience on my big OE. I trained the odd client but focused my time on travelling through Europe, meeting amazing people and experiencing different cultures.
It wasn’t all play overseas, I completed a course in pregnancy and postnatal training with the goal of coming back to NZ and starting up a business based around this population group.
I then discovered Pilates and decided it would compliment my knowledge in pre and postnatal training. I hadn’t done a lot of Pilates prior, other than the home DVD’s, so when I completed my three week intensive mat work course with the International brand Stott Pilates, I was definitely sold. My running was stronger, I felt I was walking taller and just felt more control in general.
I couldn’t wait to get back to NZ and bring my knowledge with me. The success I have had with clients through Personal Training combined with Pilates has been incredible. I have continued my study over here with workshops on Back Care, Weight loss and Prenatal Pilates, as well as a very motivating course on Injuries and Special Populations which has changed my approach to training completely.
I am currently studying the reformer which takes Pilates to a whole new level and am really looking forward to starting up the reformer studio here at Genesis.
The success I have had with clients through Personal Training combined with Pilates has been incredible. I have continued my study over here with Reformer Courses and workshops on Back Care, Weightloss and Prenatal Matwork. That progressed me into new areas with Reformer training. These included athletic conditioning on the Reformer, Shoulder and Knee Stability, as well as a very motivating course on Injuries and Special Populations, which has changed my approach to training completely.
My goal now is to increase the awareness of Pilates within Genesis and educate our members on the importance Pilates can have on everyone’s training and health. With knowledge of the 5 Basic Principles of Pilates: Breathing, Pelvic Placement, Rib Cage Placement, Scapula Movement and Stabilisation, Head and Cervical Placement, you are set to not only excel in a Pilates class, but in everyday activities and sports too.
For example, the simple movement of reaching for something in a high cupboard or lifting something heavy can lead to injury if poor technique is used. The Principle of Rib Cage Placement can be applied as it encourages activation of your abdominal muscles on your rib cage and ensures you maintain a neutral posture.
As you lift your arms overhead, the tendency is to allow your spine to go into extension causing stress in your back and increasing the risk of injury. With the knowledge of the Rib Cage Placement Principle, you learn to engage your abdominals to maintain a neutral posture, while reaching arms about the head.
For those of you who have ever experienced any back pain, I am sure your ears have pricked up now!
Up until a few weeks ago, Genesis only offered Matwork Pilates classes, you are now lucky enough to have the opportunity to work on the Reformer Machines in the new studio! These machines are in a class of their own, allowing you to perform all the same movements you can on the gym machines and more, in a controlled and challenging way, while encouraging correct posture and movement patterns.
Pilates teaches you to move your body in the correct way, to mobilise and stabilise your joints, tone and firm your muscles while giving you a longer leaner look to your body, it make you stand taller, feel stronger and move with greater ease. What more could you want out of an exercise programme!
Health and Fitness has always been a passion of mine, I feel very lucky to be able to work in an industry where I can work with people to help them achieve results that they thought they never could achieve. There is nothing more satisfying than the look on my clients face when they have reached their goals!
