Hi Everyone,
I’m Brendan and many of you will know me as the skinny runner and cyclist who you see around the gym! If you haven’t seen me out and about running, or realise you see me doing a lot of it, you may get the idea that I well... like running. It’s great for the heart, speeds weight loss, strengthens bones, relieves depression and can be a very social activity, so please don’t be shy to give it a try. We all start somewhere, and although people think of me as Mr Ultra-Fit Marathon Man, it wasn’t always that way!
Before I immigrated to New Zealand I was a full-time office worker in London, working long hours in a high stress environment, commuting up to five hours a day, skipping meals, doing no exercise, and way out of shape. Many years before I’d been reasonably fit and had my first experiences at triathlons, but life had got in the way, and I ended up with a loud wakeup call when I found myself in hospital due to health issues. Ten kilos overweight, tired, lethargic and ill, I knew it was time to do something about it!
Like anything worth achieving, it took me time and hard work to turn things around, but having got my own house in order, I decided I wanted to help other people do the same. So that took me down the pathway of studying in the health and fitness field, qualified as a Personal Trainer, and here I am!
Of course that means that excuses such as ‘I’m tired, busy etc!’ won’t carry much weight with me. We need to exercise regularly and often, to get real benefits. Whether you’re at Genesis for weight loss, general health and fitness, or training for sport, setting manageable but challenging goals can be a great way to stay motivated.
Lastly of course, I can’t go without mentioning endurance training. One of the things I love about NZ is the abundance of inclusive sporting events, from family fun runs to the Coast to Coast. People from all walks of life give it a go and get a fantastic sense of achievement. In March I was in Taupo Ironman supporting some friends. I saw world champions complete record times and many cheers for exceptional athletes finishing, but the biggest cheer of the day went to the last finisher, who battled in the rain for almost seventeen hours and finished less than two minutes before the cut off! All finished competitors were there, along with a massive crowd lining the finish chute, to salute the bravery of spirit that keeps someone going all the way to the line.
Whether your goal is your first 5k, the Round Taupo cycle ride, an ocean swim or an Ultra-Marathon, or you just want a peek into the world of endurance events, come and have a chat and maybe you’ll be inspired to start on your own road to glory. Many people are a bit wary of starting to run, or making a start on something new, and that’s why I’d really like to encourage you to consider joining one of the running groups, such as the MY FIRST 5K which starts on 17 May, and is designed to literally take a non-runner from the couch to jogging 5k in nine weeks. ! Remember, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’.
See you out there,
Brendan Moore
